Return to index of stories...
Hello, welcome to this special pre-primary edition of New Hampshire Outlook,
I'm Beth Carroll.
Voters were treated to doubleheader debates in the final days before the NH vote.
The crucial forums were broadcast the same day a CNN/WMUR poll showed a dead heat between Hillary Clinton & Barak Obama on the democratic side
and, a surge for John McCain with Mitt Romney dipping to 2nd place.
Just as in Iowa, NH polls show voters more interested in "change" than experience.
Outlook's Richard Ager watched Saturday's back-to-back debates with Washington Post Columnist EJ Dionne to get his perspective as we head into the campaign homestretch.

More than ten thousand elementary, middle and high school students participated in New Hampshire's Mock Election.
The votes were counted January 4th. More than half voted democratic.
And 57% of those votes favored Sen. Barack Obama.
Republican candidate Mitt Romney received 35% of the republican votes.
To see all the results, including where New Hampshire's young people stand on the issues, visit our NH Votes 2008 webpage on our website.

Moving up the NH Primary forced presidential candidates to air political spots right at the "height" of the Christmas shopping season.
Given the shortened primary calender the big trend in late december: campaign "holiday" ads.
We take a look back at the blitz before the balloting.

TV Ads SCRIPT
NATS: Pol Ad Tape: Barack/kids merry christmas happy holidays smile:48
TRK1: Just as retailers rely on tv ads to sell products, campaigns rely on tv ads to sell themselves.
NATS: EDWARDS Christmas tree behind him /36:08 1 out of homless.veterans.poverty who speaks for them.season of miracle 36"20 faith and love…
TRK2: How effective are these messages? We called on Jennifer Borda - an assistant professor of Communication at UNH … to help us sort thru the latest crop of ads.
NATS: Huckabee Ad / 15:45 Huckabee: are you worn out CU
TRK2: While Mike Huckabee's ad evoked some criticism for mixing politics & religion - Borda says it hit its mark.
SOT: 1:02:44 It fits in well with his image.trying to construct.:46
1:03:04 I think silent night song playing in background overall religious intonation:10
1:03:17 I think it kind of works for audience he's targeting 1:03:20
TRK3: Hillary Clinton's ad turned issues into gifts.
NATS: Clinton Pol Ad Tape:43 music up…bring troops home.where univ pre k…there it is… happy holidays 1:11
SOT: Jen: 1:11:28 she was presenting her wishes for country univ health care war with Iraq combining holiday greeting and reminding viewers of pol platform is but I think it also showing her with gifts, a softer image of her than you've seen in other ads of her recently…I think that worked as well.
SOT: 1:20:03 2 very dif ads there but I think strategically they both work well.

Analysts say.the sheer number of ads dilutes their importance -- which only means ads have to be really good to cut through the noise.
